Winter Weekend Getaway

January 25th & 26th Kate and I decided to take an overnight getaway with just the two of us.  Nothing huge planned just some time to ourselves away from home, work, kids, and everything else.

Unlike last year there was no huge snowstorm a few days before that dropped 20 inches of snow on our destination.  You'd actually be hard pressed to find snow on the ground at all.  After ditching Wesley we headed South West crossing over into New Hampshire in Dover to grab a slice and some garlic knots at La Festa Pizza. As always it was fantastic!

We then made the drive to Funspot because I love pinball and Kate loves ticket games so it works out.  We spent a couple hours getting out game on and Kate won a boatload of tickets that we redeemed for some decent schlock!

We got an Air BNB but it's a hotel, got a cheaper rate on Air BNB, Cedar Lodge at Brickyard Mountain.  We had to go to the office at Sun Valley Cottages to pick up our key.  Both places are right near Funspot.  The lodge is old, but clean and in decent shape.  Our sliding glass door wasn't sealing correctly and I had to put a towel in the frame to keep the wind from rattling it.  Also we later found that the walls were quite thin.

We got check in and our room set up.  After a bit we decided to go and get something to eat.  We drove to Meredith to get some dinner, but most of the places were closed for the season.  We ended up at The Mug in Center Harbor and had a decent dinner.  On the way back to the room we stopped at Meredith Station, a retro themed gas station to get some snacks for the room.

Back at the room we found the 1987 classic Overboard starring Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn.  I haven't seen this movie in year and either had Kate, who owns it on DVD.  We settled in for the night enjoying the flick.

At about 10 pm we got some neighbors who were talking quite loud.  Their conversation was super boring as well!  They were having, what they felt, was a deep conversation about various topics that had no importance.  Honestly I can't exactly recall but they definitely were giving off the aura of being crunchy hippie, people who had a high level of self importance.

Once the movie was over and we shut the TV off we could hear them even better, unfortunately.  Finally they got quiet, then, like out of a TV show or movie we could hear the bed springs squeaking.  Kate and I started laughing because it was just too unreal.  Some audible noised joined the rhythmic bed springs before they finally quieted down for the night.

The next morning we packed up and to leave.  Kate went to go drop the key off at the vacant front desk, as instructed and I brought the bags to the van through another door.  The hallway outside out neighbors door had a very strong odor, not drugs, but that mixture of patchouli and other smells that I associate with crunchy hippies.

We headed to Guilford and got breakfast at an old bank turned restaurant called Kitchen Cravings.  We got seated straight way but after us the place really got busy.  Kate really enjoyed her breakfast but I was not a fan of my sausage gravy on biscuits so I didn't them.

We were sitting at a table with four chairs and about two feet from us was a table for two people.  A couple was sat there and as soon as the girl sat down I was overcome by the same exact odor from the hallway at the Cedar Lodge.  Then she pulled out a book and two continued their conversation from the night before.  WHAT ARE THE CHANCES!  I couldn't even look at Kate out of fear of laughing, which we did as soon as we got in the van and closed the doors.

On the drive home we stopped in Rochester so Kate could look at Pet Smart so we could do some research on guinea pigs and hamsters as the both Wesley and Addison want a small furry pet.  As I hadn't eaten breakfast and they were just opening I decided to get a burger at Mooyah!

I first saw the chain last year on father's day driving though and hadn't been back in the area since then.  Mooyah was founded in 2007 in Plano, Texas and this is the closest location to us.  In the rest of New England there are a half dozen locations in Massachusetts and a couple in Connecticut.

The burger was fantastic!  Just the kind of burger that I had been craving for the last few weeks.  The fries were decent but didn't blow me away.  Kate was still full from her breakfast so she walked over to the Starbucks to grab herself a fancy drink.

Just like last year, we had a great night away together.  Hopefully next year we can go again!

Until Next Time!
